Safety Signs and Signboards (Photoluminescent)
Photoluminescent safety signs from a Spanish manufacturer, in IMPLASER B150 quality: the signs provide a luminance of 150 mcd/m² after 10 minutes and 20 mcd/m² after 60 minutes, with an afterglow time of up to 2000 minutes, i.e. more than 33 hours. This significantly exceeds the requirements of DIN 67510 and complies with the ISO 7010, ISO 16069 and ISO 3864 standards.
Available in three colour groups: red for fire safety signs, green for escape signs, yellow for warning and occupational safety signs. Available as self-adhesive stickers and as rigid panels, in several sizes.
Which sign is for what?
Fire safety signs (red) – mark the location of fire protection equipment: fire extinguisher, fire hydrant, manual fire alarm call point, fire alarm control panel, gas main shut-off valve, smoke and heat extraction control panel, DC disconnect switch for solar systems in case of fire. This category also includes prohibition signs, such as the "Do not use in case of fire!" lift sign.
Escape signs (green) – show the exit and escape route: directional arrows, emergency exit, stairs, panic lock operating instructions, assembly point, first aid station, eyewash station.
Warning signs (workplace safety, yellow) – draw attention to hazards in the workplace.
Photoluminescent paint – for where continuous marking is needed instead of a sign: stair edges, thresholds, floor guidance lines. Also available in a 7 kg package.
Self-adhesive or rigid sign?
The self-adhesive version is suitable for smooth, clean, dry surfaces: it goes up quickly and takes up no space. The rigid sign can be screwed on or mounted with spacers, is more durable, and can also be used on rough or uneven walls. If the sign needs to be visible from the side, for example in a long corridor, choose a panoramic or perpendicular version, as these are noticeable even while walking.
Sizes and recognition distance
The size of the sign is determined by how far away it needs to be recognised. A 15x15 cm sign has a recognition distance of over 10 metres, while larger versions such as 21x21, 22x22, 30x20 or 42x42 cm have an even greater distance. In large halls or long corridors, the smallest size is therefore not sufficient.
Text signs (30x10 cm) typically indicate the name of the equipment, such as fire alarm control panel, gas main shut-off valve, or RWA control panel.
Where should they be placed?
The sign for fire protection equipment should be placed above the equipment, typically at a height between 1.8 and 2.5 metres, so that it remains visible above objects standing near the wall. Escape route signs should be placed so that the next sign is visible from every point along the route: wherever there is a change of direction, a sign is always required.
It is important that a photoluminescent sign only works if it has been charged: place the sign somewhere it will be exposed to light during normal operation. A sign placed behind a cabinet or in a dark corner will not glow during a power outage.
Frequently asked questions
What do 150 mcd/m² and 2000 minutes mean?
Luminance shows how brightly the sign glows after the light source is switched off: 150 mcd/m² 10 minutes after darkening, 20 mcd/m² after 60 minutes. The 2000 minutes refers to the afterglow decay time, meaning the sign remains detectable for more than 33 hours.
Why is ISO 7010 important?
This standard defines the uniform appearance of pictograms so that they can be understood by anyone, regardless of language skills. This is especially important for foreign employees and visitors.
Can a self-adhesive sign be applied to a painted wall?
Yes, on a smooth, clean, dry, grease-free surface. For rough plaster, whitewashed walls, or outdoor and humid locations, we recommend a rigid sign instead.
Is it mandatory to mark the location of a fire extinguisher?
The location of fire protection equipment must be marked so that it can be found quickly in an emergency, and the marking must remain functional even during a power outage. This is why photoluminescent signs are used.
How long can a photoluminescent sign be used?
The afterglow layer may weaken over time, especially due to UV radiation. If the sign is visibly yellowed, discolored, peeling, or barely visible in the dark, replace it.
